WHY IT SCARES ME
Hawk Hundred entrant Gary “Story Hawk” Henry wrote this post about why the Hawk Hundred scares him—even though he knows the course well, and he’s finished other hundreds, including Leadville: http://ultrastory.com/Blog1/?p=2644

THE OUTSTANDING ELEVEN
Here they are—all 11 of the hundred-mile heroes who have signed up so far for the Hawk Hundred, as well as their qualifying hundreds:

Michael Matteson, Carbondale, IL, Kettle Morraine
Bob Murphy, La Vista, NE, Zumbro
Scott Hill, Wichita, KS, Heartland
Keith Straw, Malvern, PA, Sulphur Springs
Dustin Birdsong, Lindsborg, KS, Mother Road
Coleen Voeks, Kansas City, KS, Western States
Tommy Doias, St. Louis, MO, Patowatomi
Norman Decelles, Lawrence, Lean Horse
Eldon Galano, Wichita, Heartland
Debbie Webster, Gardner, KS, Heartland
Gary Henry, Lawrence, KS, Ozark Trail

And here’s the design for the belt buckle they all hope to win: http://www.flickr.com/photos/trailhawks/5956592336/in/photostream

The Hawk Hundred 100-Mile Trail Run
Race Guide is now available. Check it out for all the gory details on this never-before-run event!

Race date: September 10, 2011

Start time: 06:00 AM

Race distance: 100 mi

Race details:

This is a graduate-level, no-frills, self-serve hundred. You must have
finished a previous 100-mile race since Jan. 1, 2009 in the allotted time
to enter the Hawk Hundred. The 32-hour course will be four 23-mile laps
with an 8-mile out-and-back on the full Clinton Lake North Shore Trail
System. Much of the heavily wooded course is rocky and root-bound,
though relatively flat. There’s an out-and-back hill climb close to each
end of the East-West course

Each lap features a mile-long stretch along Clinton Lake, most of it on
jagged rock. There will be two unmanned crew access stations—one about
five miles into each 23-mile lap, and one 17 miles in. They
are both easy to get to by car. Each station will feature a pop-up tent
with table, water jug and sign-in book. Runners will sign in and out at
each station on each visit, whether they spend time at the station or not.
Since there will be no aid station volunteers, crew and pacers are highly
recommended. Volunteers will patrol the course and the aid stations
throughout the race. T-shirt for all entrants; belt buckles for all finishers.
1st, 2nd, 3rd place awards, men and women.
